Richard's Wing Walk!

Our amazing supporter Richard is “winging his way” towards his fundraising target!

One of our bravest supporters, Richard Collett from Carbon60 (part of the Impellam STEM Group), is taking on a wing walk for Lia’s Wings this August, to raise vital funds and awareness.

His challenge is a just over a few months away and he hasn’t held back with his fundraising efforts! As well as asking friends, family and colleagues for sponsorship, he has also planned a raffle for the summer, with some truly incredible prizes!

So far Richard has searched high and low for raffle-worthy prizes, and has already managed to secure international rugby tickets, a portable hot tub, experience day prizes, and even a home made stack of brownies…a little something for everyone!

Everything raised from the raffle will go towards Richard’s fundraising for his wing walk. This is a huge challenge for Richard and something that has been on his bucket list for years. He says:

“For some strange reason, I like to push myself occasionally and do something out of the ordinary!  A few years ago, I trekked to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro (but the hard way up the western breach – an almost vertical climb for several hours), then I’ve done several mud runs, a bungee jump (over Victoria Falls) and a skydive (in Coffs Harbour on the East Coast of Australia).  So this year, I wanted to do something totally different.  A wing walk has been on my bucket list for a while, so I thought why not look into that?!  So here we are!  I’m now committed and as terrifying as it sounds and looks in various videos, I will be completing this in the Autumn in aid of Lia’s Wings.”

Richard first heard about Lia’s Wings through his employer, Carbon60 (part of the Impellam STEM Group), who became corporate partners of Lia’s Wings in 2022. Since then, he has been looking for the right opportunity to help raise funds for our vital work. He says:

“When I first heard about the charity, I knew it was something we, as a business had to support, and if I ever did anything crazy enough to warrant fundraising, it would be my charity of choice too.  I never knew that these sorts of transfers for sick children and babies were not funded by the NHS and with two children of my own, I could not imagine how I would cope if my children needed this sort of care.  How would I possibly afford an air transfer, how would I get my children the care they required and how would I be strong enough to sort everything out while keeping my family informed?  I’m very lucky that I’ve not been in this situation, but I know it can happen to anyone at any time.  I’m also very lucky to be aware of the charity and through my fundraising, I hope I can help to raise awareness of what the charity can do for parents in desperate need.”

We have been supporting Richard with his challenge for some time already, and have seen just how much dedication and effort he has put into his raffle quest – it really is astonishing to see the lengths he has gone to, to make his efforts as successful as possible.

So far he has already raised almost £900, and we cant say thank you enough! To find out more about Richard’s challenge  - or to support him with his death-defying challenge, please head to his fundraising page here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/richard-collett-2024wingwalk
